Breathing for Surfers

Surfing is one of the world's most demanding activities. The level of activity can vary from calm, slow, easy surfs to explosive, fast and extreme experiences.

No matter what level of surfer you are, no mattrer what waves you surf- you could benefit from learning how to improve your breath-hold and core strength.

Extreme Spearfishing, offers Surfing oriented breath-hold and core training workshops in Australia and the pacific.

There have been many discussions as to what training is best suitable for surfing in general and big-wave surfing in perticular. Most surfers end up practicing the "rock running" drills and similar drills.
After years of experience in the field of breathing and high performance training we have developed a system that will maximize your ability to perform in the likely event of getting caught under a wave.

During our 1 day workshop, a basic theory and physiology is tought in the course room and then off to the pool. The pool methodolgy is one of a kind, developed by Apnea Australia Instructor Ant Judge, (Aussie record holder), and will leave you totally pumped to get out and face those next big set waves!

Other typical Key principles covered:

  • Preparation is key - knowing what to expect is the first step.
  • Core workout - It is no secret that core training and balance are two of the most important elements of surfing.
  • Warm up- Stretching is not the only thing you need to work on before you go out to the surf.
  • In water buildup - basic drills that can be performed before you catch your first wave.
  • Breathing - Before and during the surf.
  • Relaxation - How not to stress while being held down.
  • Recovery breathing - The most important tool to ensure fast, efficient recovery between waves.

The surfing workshops can either be held as a "one off" clinic of one day or as a series of training sessions that focus on different elements of surfing.

Local Spear Conditions - Tuesday 24th Feb 2015

by laurence on 24 Feb 2015
Finally, after weeks and weeks of swell, bad vis and wind, there looks to finally be a reprieve. Swell is dropping all the way through till Saturday, coupled with South winds to push in the clear water for most of the remainder of the week, this looks weekend looks like it could be good for diving finally. The swell is forecast at 0.8 metres for Saturday with very very light winds. Sunday however is a tad bigger at 1.0 metre but with medium strength Southerly winds. Try jumping in at a protected spot if the wind bothers you, such as The Bower (back of Shelley Beach away from the Marine Park), Dee Why, Warriewood, South Whale Beach and South Palm Beach. We are hoping that this forecast will stay true and everyone finally gets in and re-stocks the freezers! Fingers crossed! Forecast courtesy of www.seabreeze.com.au
